The Elephant Nature Park has had to face the results of deforestation as well. Due to the lack of trees, the elephants can’t find enough food for themselves. An elephant easily eats 200 kilo of leaves and fruits a day! Due to the deforestation there is not enough food in the forest to sustain the elephants naturally; therefore we have to buy supplementary food at the market. This is very costly and the most of the food often contains pesticides which is harmful to the elephants.
Step 1: from sibling to young tree in the nursery
Stap 2: planting the young trees
Stap 3: full-grown trees, food for elephants!
In 2008 Bring the Elephant Home aims to plant 100,000 trees for elephants in different areas in Thailand. The organic forests we wish to plant are the solution. The elephants can eat by them selves, their habitat enlarges, the area is protected against further deforestation and the elephants will maintain the forest themselves. With everything they shovel down, they also eat seeds. When they discharge them, undigested, the seeds can germinate on the spot, using the fertilizer provided with it. And another tree has been planted. An elephant that has enough room will never graze an area to the ground. He will always leave behind enough to have plenty to eat upon return. To invest in trees is sustainable!
